We will update this crystal guide as we discover new information.

Quick Overview of Indigo Gabbro

What is Indigo Gabbro?

Indigo Gabbro is a black and grey patchy appearing Gabbro stone that sometimes has a slight violet tinge in bright sunlight. Most all other Gabbro stones are course grained, but this variety seems to be much finer-grained, and most are able to take a fairly good polish. In almost all Indigo Gabbro stones, the pattering of the various grey and black hues is more like a mottling where the separate colors have distinct divisions. Indigo Gabbro is composed of several minerals, including quartz and feldspar.

Gabbro is the most abundant rock in the deep oceanic crust, but this fined-grained version is found in Madagascar and mined primarily for the metaphysical trade. Most other Gabbro is used in the construction industry. Indigo Gabbro has been marketed as a trademarked entity called Mystic Merlinite.

Indigo Gabbro should not be confused (although it often is) with Merlinite, which is a trade name for Dendritic agate, or with Blizzard Stone which is a course-grained Gabbro with white splotches that cannot be polished very well.

How are they formed?

Indigo Gabbro is mined in Madagascar, and a small amount has been found in Alaska. It is volcanic in origin, limiting the locations in which it can occur. These rocks are created when molten magma is confined beneath the Earth's surface and cools into a crystalline mass.

What are Indigo Gabbro's Metaphysical Properties?

A relatively recent discovery, the exploration of Indigo Gabbro is far from complete. Some users find it helpful as a grounding stone. Likely this stems from its color energy. Some have found it useful in balancing certain chakras, but the jury is still out there. One recent discovery seems to be its value in a process called Shadow Work. This is a voyage of self-discovery where one seeks to understand the darker sides of themselves. It is a method of learning from one’s mistakes and helping stop repeating toxic and harmful patterns that are affecting our health and attitudes. The discovery of Indigo Gabbro and the somewhat coincidental interest in Shadow Work seems to indicate the stone’s purpose may well be in the realm of self-discovery by focusing on the “errors of one’s ways” with an eye to finding creative solutions to change the “pattern of one’s life.”

Chakra Balancing Healing Properties

chakra healing

Indigo Gabbro helps to unblock and balance the Third Eye Chakra, the center of our perception and command. It directs our sight and everyday awareness of the world. Our consciousness is located here, and we relate to ourselves through this chakra. It balances the important and the unimportant, sorting meaning from data and impressions.

It commands the energy flow within the body. When the Brow Chakra is in balance, we see clearly and understand what we see. We can interpret visual cues, and our perception is high. Our thoughts and internal communications within ourselves are healthy and vibrant. We are open to new ideas, dreams, and visions and can control the flow of energy within all the chakras. The dark blue/purple crystals of indigo are used to treat imbalances of the Brow Chakra. It is a quiet color, one of mystery and wisdom, and judgment.

They also connect to the Crown Chakra. The Crown Chakra is located at the top of the head and is our gateway to the expanded universe beyond our bodies. It controls how we think and how we respond to the world around us. It is the fountainhead of our beliefs and the source of our spirituality. When the Crown is in balance, our energies are in balance. Imbalances of the Crown Chakra are treated with Light Violet crystals. Their violet rays have the universal life force of magic, dreams, inspiration, and destiny.

Color Energy

Color Wheel

Indigo Gabbro embodies the color indigo, combining the intuition of the violet ray with the trust of the pure blue ray. It brings wisdom, truth, dignity, and spiritual mastery. A stone of judgment and long life, it promotes introspection and can result in profound wisdom when used well. Dark indigo crystals provide honesty and are especially good for religious and spiritual journeys, while light indigo crystals connect us to the natural world and improve our appreciation of others.

How to use Indigo Gabbro?

As a stone for discovering one’s inner self, this is not a stone for overt healing, meditation, or even formal ritual use. Rather this is a very subtle stone of deep energy but the energy that is almost not detectable by the conscious mind. This is not exactly a dream stone, either. However, it does appear to be one that needs to connect to the subconscious rather than the body or the awake mind. To use this stone, you must first accept that you are not perfect and make mistakes that directly affect your life and spirit. You must be willing to face those mistakes and their results with a healthy approach to self-knowledge and self-improvement. With this, you are ready to use Indigo Gabbro as part of your self-care rituals.

Self-Care Ritual

  1. Prepare your Indigo Gabbro stones by very carefully cleansing and aligning them to your desire for self-knowledge. You can find excellent guides to doing this in the Cleansing Crystals ebook.
  2. With cleansed and aligned Indigo Gabbro stones, place them in a bed of herbs consisting of Borage, the Herb of inner Strength; Comfrey, the Herb of Good Choices; and Marjoram, the Herb of Discovery. These can be dried or fresh.
  3. Place this bowl near where you will sleep.
  4. Now activate the crystals and herbs with a few drops of an Elixir of Self-Knowledge. These are made from various Amethyst and Dark Violet crystal essences. In a pinch, Amethyst Crystal Essence will work well.
  5. As you add the drops of elixir, state your intention that your inner self becomes more aware tonight of the errors of judgment and that enlightened ideas be shared to improve your judgment and decisions in the future.
  6. Now as you lay down to sleep, try to keep a ribbon of violet light running from the dish of stones to your forehead.
  7. In the morning, try at first awakening to think, “What did I learn last nigtht?”

A few nights of practice will make this a valuable ritual. Don’t try this more than once a week or so.
