What is a Shiva Lingam?
The Shiva Linga, or Shiva Lingam, is a river rock found in the Narmada River of India. It is polished to a high sheen in a unique shape called an ellipsoid. They vary in size from an inch or so to several feet in length. They are usually shades of brown and white. These stones are specifically created for the worldwide metaphysical market as healing stones representing the “Cosmic Egg.”
While these stones are similar to parts of the traditional Shiva Linga found in Hindu temples, there are no indications of any cultural appropriation as physically, these stones are quite different from that of Hindu traditional Shiva Linga, which is an image dedicated to Shiva, often represented within a disc-shaped platform. This is a very important distinction, as there is extensive literature spanning thousands of years as to the meanings and uses of the Hindu traditional Shiva Linga, which does not apply to these river rocks in spite of the very similar name given to them in the trade.
These stones are sold in the metaphysical trade as healing stones; their primary metaphysical attribute is based on their very unique shape - the ellipsoid is a representative of the “cosmic egg.” The cosmic egg is a symbol found in many cultures that depict the chaos that preceded the creation of the cosmos. Many traditions hold that chaos was contained within the cosmic egg, and all that now exists originated within the cosmic egg before time and space existed. The Vedic, Zoroastrian, Greek, Phoenician, Chinese, Finnish, Polynesian, and many others have similar cosmic egg myths and symbols.
How are Shiva Lingams formed?
According to some studies, Shiva Lingam's composition is the result of meteorite fragments impacting the Narmada River in central-west India 14 million years ago. Throughout time, the minerals in the river were fused with meteorite fragments by the river's currents.
What are Shiva Lingam's Metaphysical Properties?
The Shiva Lingam, as an ellipsoid, offers powerful symbolism that can be interpreted in many ways. One popular way is that it offers a combination of the male and female energies, the Yin and Yang, the balance of the Chakra energies, etc. While these interpretations are both promoted and denied in the literature, it does seem consistent that the fertility and creation of elemental energies seem to dominate and be universally accepted.
The fertility symbolism of the egg shape is powerful and well-accepted. This symbolism makes the Shiva Lingam very useful in a variety of applications in metaphysical use, primarily those of the physical world.
The creation of elemental symbolism of the cosmic egg is one of more spiritual use. In this way, the Shiva Lingam can be used for metaphysical uses to create environments of more spirituality, find one’s personal spiritual path, and create a spiritual world for one’s own self.
How to use Shiva Lingam?
In using the Shiva Lingam within the physical crystal healing world, the primary application is to use it to balance the Sacral Chakra. The sacral chakra can be located below the navel and above the pubic bone on the front of your pelvis. The sacral chakra is considered the life force of the body. It controls the flow of information from the body to the mind and from the mind to the body.
When in balance, the Sacral Chakra makes you feel graceful, playful, happy, and flexible in both body and mind. Since it is the life force part of the flow of the body, it can be very noticeable when out of balance or blocked. If this is the case, you may feel confusion, over-dependency on others, repression of feelings, inability to feel joy, fear of sensuality or sex, frustration, and bitterness. If you feel as if your sacral chakra could be out of balance, you might well find the use of a Shiva Lingam can help. To use one to balance the Sacral Chakra, you should find a very quiet place where you will not be disturbed. Frankly, if you are female, you might well find the best time is the night of the full moon.
First, cleanse your stone in warm running water, rubbing it gently. Let it air dry. Next, lay down and hold the stone in one hand, laying on your palm with arms outstretched. Have your legs open a bit in what is often called a relaxation pose in yoga. Now bring the Shiva Lingam slowly into your chest and then down to just below your navel. Lay it on your lower belly just below your navel, with the ends pointing to your left and right. Now hold it lightly with a finger or two from each hand and very, very slowly breathe. After four or five minutes, very slowly turn the Shiva Lingam 180 degrees, so the ends are reversed. Again hold it lightly with the fingers of each hand for a few minutes. You can repeat this as necessary. The feeling will be one of total rejuvenation of your chakra. You may well feel an upwelling of joy and satisfaction. Often a smile will form without your conscious thought.
In spiritual use, the Shiva Lingam can be used as an altar centerpiece when you seek to understand your place in the cosmos and your purpose in life. It can be placed in a bed of selected herbs and anointed with oils suited to your spiritual desires. Feel free to experiment. The creation energy can be further focused and aligned with additional crystals and elixirs.
