Introduction to Peppermint

mint 3

Peppermint has a rich history dating back to 1500 B.C. There are records that indicate that peppermint may have originated in Northern Africa, but ancient medical texts can trace the herb definitively back to ancient Egypt (c.1550 B.C.), where records indicated that they used peppermint for stomach ailments. Since these ancient times, Peppermint has been used throughout history to aid in everything from improving digestion to freshening breath to improving concentration. Magically, peppermint is used for protection, psychic development, spiritual enhancement, and prosperity.

Peppermint is one of more than 25 different varieties of plants within the Mentha species. It is apart of the plant family, Lamiaceae, of which there are more than 7,000 species. Members of the mint family are well recognized by their unique flowers and characteristically square stems. Peppermint is a natural hybrid of spearmint (which contains significantly less mint flavor) and water mint (which grows in aquatic environments and is much more potent). Peppermint may spread aggressively and can become weed-like if not maintained properly.

The sacred number of Peppermint is 133.

Peppermint for Chakra Healing

chakra healing

Peppermint is prescribed for treating imbalances of the Throat and Third Eye Chakras. The Throat Chakra When the Throat Chakra is in balance we can express what we think and what we feel. We can communicate our ideas, beliefs, and emotions. When the throat chakra is in balance and open, we can bring our personal truth out into the world. We have an easy flow of energy within the body and spirit. The energy that springs upward from the sacral chakra through the solar plexus can continue its path enabling free expression of the values and needs.

When the throat chakra is out of balance, the physical symptoms may include sore throats, tight jaws, stiff neck, and headaches. When it is out of balance spiritually you might find yourself habitually lying, feeling fear and doubt about the intentions of others, or find yourself stammering or at a loss for words. You will likely have feelings of being isolated and misunderstood. You may well have symptoms of other chakras being out of balance. This is caused by the throat chakra blocking the energy flow from the other centers.

The Third Eye Chakra is the center of perception and command. It directs our sight and everyday awareness of the world. Our consciousness is located here. This is the chakra that controls how we see ourselves and the external world.  When the Third Eye Chakra is in balance, we can see clearly and understand what we see. This is our 'intuition center' so to speak. We are able to interpret visual cues and our awareness level is high.

When it is out of balance or blocked you will find yourself confused, difficulty seeing clearly, and a hard time differentiating what is important and what is not. You may feel as if you do not have command of your thoughts. Physical symptoms can include headaches, ear aches, and vision problems. Fear not though, even if your third eye chakra is blocked or out of balance, indigo colored crystals can make it better.

Peppermint and the Goddess

goddess and herbs

Peppermint is sacred to Cerridwen, the Celtic Goddess of fertility, Demeter, Greek goddess of vegetation, the harvest, and agriculture, and Hecate, Greek goddess of magic.

Cerridwen is a powerful Underworld goddess and the guardian of the cauldron of knowledge, inspiration and rebirth. She rules the realms of death, fertility, regeneration, inspiration, magic, enchantment and knowledge. She is also the goddess of magical rites and spells, wealth, poetry, and love. Cerridwen is often cited as using her magic cauldron to make potions to bring wisdom and inspiration to those who drink them. In witchcraft, she is considered a 'white witch' and shapeshifter. Cerridwen is also associated with herbology and astrology. Because of her shapeshifting abilities, she is also considered to be a goddess of transformation and change.

Demeter is the Greek Goddess of Agriculture, the harvest, and vegetation. She presides over crops, grains, food, and the fertility of the earth, comparable to Gaia. She was also a consort to Zeus and mother of Persephone, wife of Hades. Demeter was frequently associated with images of the harvest, including flowers, fruit, and grain. She was often portrayed as a mature goddess and sometimes pictured with her daughter Persephone, who was also considered a goddess of fertility. In Greek mythology, she was portrayed as being very loyal and loving to her daughter. In one myth, it is said that Zeus promised Persephone to Hades without Demeter's knowledge. Demeter roamed for nine days, refusing to take nectar or drink ambrosia, until she found her daughter. When she learned of Zeus' deception, she refused to return to Olympus and produced famine onto the earth. She refused to bring fertility back to the earth until she was allowed to see her daughter and was so persistent in her demand that Zeus consented. Also, to ensure Demeter's return to Olympus, Zeus allowed Persephone to only live half the year in the darkness of the Underworld and the other half with her mother.

Hecate is the Greek chief goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, the moon, ghosts, necromancy, and spells. She is the daughter of the Titan, Perses, and the nymph, Asteria. Hecate was believed to have power over heaven, earth, and sea, therefore, bestowing wealth and prosperity to those who pray to her. She is also the goddess of crossroads and doorways, a guardian against evil spirits. In earlier texts, she is depicted as a single female figure wearing a long-clad robe, holding burning torches in each hand. Later depictions show her in her most popularized form, that of the triple-formed goddess, which consisted of three goddesses standing back to back, most likely so she could watch all directions of the crossroads that she guarded so diligently. Hecate, in her triple-form, was also accompanied by barking dogs, her familiars.

Peppermint Astrological Sign

15-lunar-mansion-card

The zodiac signs associated with  Peppermint are Virgo and Aquarius (16)

In Moon Astrology Peppermint is associated with the 15th Mansion of the Moon, the Mansion of Wings and the 26th Mansion of the Moon, the Mansion of the Waves.

These two associations are very helpful in determining the magical uses of Peppermint. The energy of the Mansion of Wings is that of the magic of flight.

Wings harness the magic of flight, of aspiration to the greatest heights of accomplishment whether of the the physical or the spiritual world. The Mansion of Wings is a mansion of power, rulership, dominion and a kind of magic - flight - that is to be respected. The power to soar above the Earth, to dominate the Air, to harness Fire for propulsion and to glory in conquering the Waters of the Oceans all comes from the wonders of flight made possible by Wings.

The energy of the Mansion of the Waves is that of power.

Waves are windswept water, the perfect balancing of the complementary energies to create something more powerful. A wave is one of the strongest forces of nature that sweeps over everything in its path. Stopping one requires great resistance, and they do not travel alone.

Uses of Peppermint in Feng Shui

crystal feng shui yin yang - free crystal guides

Peppermint brings Metal and Wood energies.

The leaves of the “herb” bring us metal energy. With unyielding persistence, the leaves of plants seek the sunlight with determination that is absolute. These attributes of persistence, determination and strength of desire and total focus are the energy of the metal element. Use Peppermint’s metal energy when you need strength or total focus, to strengthen desire, to stretch towards your goals, or to maintain a clear path to what you seek.

The stalks and stems of Peppermint bring us wood energy. Wood element energy is the creative energy of motivation, personal growth, and renewal. Like the time of the new moon and the Winter solstice - wood energy is new beginnings, hope, and rebirth. Use the stems of Peppermint when you need transformative energies to grasp new opportunities on the horizon.

Lore and Legends of Peppermint

lore grimoire

Mint's association with its deities actually comes from old folklore. It’s said that there was a nymph called Mentha (sometimes spelled Minthe) who caught the eye of Hades. She became his lover. When Hades chose Persephone over her, she became angry and antagonized Persephone. In retaliation, Persephone turned her into the plant we now know as mint. The same story comes in many variations. Some say that Hades loved her and Persephone became so jealous she tuned Mentha into a plant. Others state that Persephone became so angry that she trampled Mentha into the dust, after which Hades turned her trampled form into a mint plant so that she would live on forever.

Proserpine, Pluto’s wife, was said to have transformed a hated rival into the mint plant. Both the Latin, Metha, and the Greek, Minthe, have come to be associated with metamorphosed beauty.

In Ancient Athens, where it was common to scent different parts of the body with different herbs, peppermint was the scent most commonly used on the arms.

Peppermint is also tied to Hades because the Greeks used it to cover any scent produced by dead bodies during funeral rites.

In the 14th Century, we found early versions of toothpaste. It was used during that time for whitening teeth.

Culpepper (1616 – 1654), a physician-astrologer who fought in his country’s Civil War, suggests mint should never be given to a wounded man because it prevents his wound from healing. He used mint to treat almost 40 different ailments.

This species of mint is also known as “Mackerel Mint” and in Germany it was called “Lady’s Mint” with a pun on the word munze, a word meaning a building or institution where coins are produced. The name, spear or spire, refers to the spiry form of its floral blossoming.
