Read on. Here is an easy to read and understand guide to the Zodiac, your place in it, and the crystals and gems that fit you and your life.
(OK if you are in a hurry just click here to jump to the table below that will tell you which crystals and gems are right for you depending on your sign.)
Now, to begin the Zodiac is the circle of star constellations that sun appears to move thru each year. Imagine a circle of star constellation around the sun outside the Earth's orbit. Now imagine you are on the Earth and you can look through the Sun. You will see a constellation on the other side.
In the picture above, if you were on the Earth during the time of year shown by the arrow, then you would see the constellation Pisces on the horizon every morning just where the sun was coming up. Then as the earth continues around the sun (moving in the direction of the arrow) you would begin to see the constellation Aquarius for about a month, and so on for the year of the earth's orbit.
As the Earth moves around the Sun each year, the constellation on the other side of the sun will change as the position of the Earth changes.
In ancient times, astrologers divided the circle into 12 sections of 30 degrees ( a circle has 360 degrees) and named each section using the name of constellation that was closest to the rising sun during that period. This was not an exact match even back then because the constellations vary in size, but the idea was to name the Zodiac sign using the name of the nearest constellation at the time (2,000 years ago).
As time has gone by and the Earth's precession around it axis has changed the backdrop of the sun as we see it, the days on our calendar that mark when a particular ancient zodiac section will appear have changed. And actually quite a bit. The original division of the zodiac was aligned with the seasons starting with Aries beginning at the vernal equinox. The zodiac and horoscopes you know are based on the ancient divisions. They are aligned with the seasons on earth, not the precessing stars behind the rising sun. The constellation that a particular zodiac period was named for may or may not be behind the sun during that time. It is just the source of the name.
So don't mix up Sun Sign and the constellation by the same name.
Now the names of the Zodiac signs were taken from the shapes and legends of the nearby constellations So the Sun sign Scorpio for example has a symbol and a picture that is taken from the constellation Scorpio. what the ancient astronomers thought the arrangement of stars looked like...in this case a scorpion.
Now we know the constellations don't line up exactly with the Sun Signs any more. The Sun Signs are set by dates so there are 12 of them in a year, each about 30 days long. And, yes sometimes during those times the Sun Sign matches the actually constellation in which the sun rises, but that is just coincidence.
So to be clear. There are 12 signs of the Zodiac. Each governs 1/12 of the year, a period of about a month. They are not aligned with the calendar months because they start from the Vernal Equinox, which is about March 21st which was the first day of the year in ancient times, not Jan 1st, a more modern staring point. And the Sun sign sort of aligns with the constellation of the same name, but not exactly anymore.
So your Sun Sign is the one in the table below. It was named for a constellation that was near the rising sun on that date about 2,000 years ago.

The following table is based on, The Curious Lore of Precious Stone published in 1913 by Dr. George Kunz, and on the list in Dr. William T Fernie's book, The Occult and Curative Powers of Precious Stones, published in 1907. The first gemstone listed in bold are from these sources. Other stones generally accepted today as being associated with a particular sign are listed below it in normal type.
If you wish, wear a stone associated with the sign under which you were born, or under which you feel safe.
