Introduction to the Meaning and Uses of Blue John Fluorite
Fluorite is one of the most collectible and highly sought after crystals in the world, loved by mineralogists and metaphysical healers alike. Its remarkable cubes are at times, almost too perfect to believe, emerging like magic treasure in matrix rock, or tightly stacked cube on cube like a futuristic city in miniature. Fluorite is an extraordinary creation of Nature, beautiful and luminous, soft and glassy, often vibrant in color, with an internal structure of order and perfection that resonates with the human mind like no other crystal. It carries a calm, stable frequency that brings order to chaos, and scattered and discordant energies into cohesion and harmony. Fluorite supports spirituality and thought, focus and concentration, and balance in all aspects of one’s life.
Known as the “Genius Stone,” Fluorite represents the highest state of mental achievement, boosting aptitude and discernment, the absorption of new information, and helping one work through complex issues. Its energy stimulates the electrical charge of brain cells, drawing in more life force (prana) as it encourages both hemispheres to work harmoniously together in balance. Expanding the consciousness, it advances the mind to greater mental, spiritual and psychic awareness. It stirs creativity and provides a limitless range of avenues for exploration. Fluorite forms in many color varieties, and while each manifests its abilities in different ways, all serve the mental body, brain and energetic levels of being. [Melody En, 294][Raphaell, 107][Ahsian, 159-160][Megemont, 84][Lembo, 151]
Blue John Fluorite carries the spirit of change and personal growth. It stimulates spontaneity and emboldens one to brave the unknown, both in physical travel, and in the desire for new discoveries and fresh experiences. Blue John encourages altruistic pursuits, enkindles trust, and helps one to make good decisions. It is a useful ally for getting oneself out of bad situations, and can lend the courage needed to effect permanent changes in one’s lifestyle. A stone of the Third Eye and Crown Chakras, Blue John brings a sense of deep peace and clarity of mind, and during times of confusion or despair offers assistance in knowing where to look for answers and solution. Blue John is one of the oldest and most famous varieties of Fluorite in the world, found only near Castleton in Derbyshire, England. It is highly prized for its unique purplish-blue and cream yellow color, and its fourteen distinctive veining and banding patterns, created by filmy inclusions of petroleum millions of years ago. This striking material was utilized throughout the 18th and 19th centuries for use in fireplace panels, vases, urns, clocks, jewelry and other stately ornamentation. The mineral is now scarce, having been mined out later as flux ore, though small amounts are still mined each year from the famous Blue John Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern for ornamental and lapidary use. The name Blue John is believed to come from the French bleu-jaune, meaning “blue-yellow,” and is also referred to as Derbyshire Blue John and Derbyshire Spar. Fluorite is composed of calcium fluoride and is a member of the Halide family. It is transparent to translucent with a vitreous luster, and crystallizes in well-formed isometric cubes, nodules, clusters, or in massive form. It is the only common mineral with perfect cleavage in four directions, a characteristic that may be visible to the naked eye in clear stones as subtle etchings permeating the entire crystal. This cleavage frequently produces perfect octahedrons, and more rarely dodecahedrons and other complex forms, including penetration twins as if one cube were growing into or out of another. Fluorite is the reference mineral for a hardness of four on the Mohs Hardness Scale, making it too soft for everyday wear as a gem, though it is carved into wonderful faceted stones and sold as collector’s specimens or used in jewelry that is not subject to impact or abrasion. [www.mindat.org][geology.com][en.wikipedia.org][www.controverscial.com]
Hailed as “the most colorful mineral in the world,” Fluorite forms in a wide variety of hues, typically purple, green, yellow, blue, and in pure form - colorless, though specimens of pink, red, white, brown and black also occur. It is frequently multi-colored with bands, or zones, of color that intermingle. Impurities, exposure to radiation, and voids in the color centers determine Fluorite’s color and help give it a wonderful luminous quality. Its crystals were some of the first specimens studied for the phenomenon of “fluorescence,” which was named for Fluorite, and are thought to be caused when trace amounts of yttrium, cerium, europium, or other rare earth elements substitute for calcium in the mineral structure. Some varieties of Fluorite may also be phosphorescent, thermoluminescent and/or triboluminescent. [www.mindat.org][geology.com][en.wikipedia.org][www.controverscial.com][Fernie, 148]
Fluorite occurs in large deposits in many locations around the world, most commonly as vein fillings in rocks that have been subjected to hydrothermal activity and contain metallic ores such as Lead, Zinc, Silver, Galena, or Sphalerite. It may also be associated with Barite, Quartz and Calcite, among others, and is often a primary or secondary mineral in marbles, granites, dolostone and limestone. Originally known as Fluorspar or Fluorospar, Fluorite is primarily an industrial mineral with a low melting point deriving its name from the Latin fleure, meaning “to flow,” and refers to its use as a flux in the steel and aluminum smelting processes. It has numerous uses in the ceramic and chemical industries as a source of fluoride, fluorine and hydrofluoric acid, and for use in glazes, enamels and specialty glass. High quality Fluorite is also used in making top grade optical lenses for cameras, microscopes, and telescopes. The term “Fluorspar” is still commonly used in the industrial and chemical trades, while “Fluorite” is used for mineralogical, lapidary and most other references. [www.mindat.org][geology.com][en.wikipedia.org][www.controverscial.com]
In addition to Blue John Fluorite, the following varieties are also widely utilized for their metaphysical properties. All carry the general properties of Fluorite in addition to their specific qualities.
Blue Fluorite brings a calm, rational energy to the system, promoting orderly, sequential thoughts and enabling one to direct the brain’s activities toward an intended purpose. Attuned to the Third Eye and Throat Chakras, it is an exceptional talisman for well-ordered record-keeping, and fosters clear, concise communication skills. It inspires gentle honesty, a sense of justice, and letting go of obsessions, frustrations and disappointments. Blue Fluorite is an ideal stone for spiritual awakening and reprogramming karmic patterns. It heals soul fragmentation from the present or past lives, and aids cellular memory healing. [Melody En, 295][Hall En, 151][Gienger, 39][Eason, 243]
Clear (Colorless) Fluorite is a mental clarity stone, stimulating to the Crown Chakra. It cleanses and energizes the aura, harmonizing the mind and spirit. This crystal allows for a shift in perspective so one may recognize the difference between struggle and the need to perpetuate it. It helps alleviate emotional turmoil, feelings of guilt or shame, and pressure from others. Clear Fluorite enhances the energies of other stones and is excellent for crystal healing layouts, and may be used to align all of the chakras, bringing universal energy into the physical body. [Margherita, 498][Melody, 278][Hall, 131][Geinger, 40][Eason, 139]
Green Fluorite is highly beneficial for clearing negative energy from the environment and brings cleansing, renewal, and a spring-like freshness to the chakras. It inspires new ideas, originality and quick thinking. Particularly healing to the Heart Chakra, this mineral brings information from the subconscious, and helps the emotional body understand issues of the heart, both current and of the past. It enables release of emotional trauma and outworn conditioning, frees one from the slavery of addictions, and allows one to serve purposes of a higher good. Harmonizing the mind with the heart, Green Fluorite helps make certain one’s thoughts, words and actions are aligned with their true purpose. [Melody, 279][Hall, 131][Gienger, 39][Eason, 293][Margherita, 499][Ahsian, 160]
Purple (Violet) Fluorite is the most peace-giving of the Fluorites, dedicated to the devotional aspects of the mind that connect with Spirit. It purifies the mind and enhances mental acuity, stimulating the Third Eye Chakra in order to bring a logical and conscious awareness of the mental processes. It is an excellent crystal for focused meditation and boosts one’s intuitive and psychic abilities. Purple Fluorite is a stone of protection and an ideal “Dream Crystal,” defending one from evil spirits and bad dreams. It radiates a marvelous energy throughout the light body relieving stress, spiritual discomfort, and physical blockages. [Melody, 279][Hall, 131][Margherita, 498][Eason, 210][Simmons, 159]
Rainbow Fluorite, also called Multi-colored Fluorite, displays multiple bands of varying hues of Fluorite. It is ideal for overall cleansing and repair of the auric field, and for activating and energizing all chakras. It calms a chaotic mind and promotes freethinking, flexibility, and freedom of choice. It empowers one to verbalize their ideas and needs with confidence, and to embrace self-sufficiency by not resting one’s happiness in the hands of others. Meditation with this mineral can help reveal the truth of a relationship and is marvelous for releasing suppressed emotions and facilitating life changes. Rainbow Fluorite is an excellent talisman for “Indigo Children” to experience simplicity, safety and love on this dimension, and is a great crystal for gaining access to and traversing alternate realities. It may also be used to remove ethereal cords and to shield against psychic attack. [Simmons, 159][Gienger, 39][Melody En, 298][www.spiritofisis.org]
Yellow Fluorite, also called Golden Fluorite, is a crystal of unity, intellect and creativity. It increases understanding, logic and intellectual ability, while boosting one’s imagination and resourcefulness. Stimulating the Solar Plexus Chakra, this mineral aligns the will with the mind, ensuring one can bring one’s ideas and goals into reality through action and intent. Yellow Fluorite is also beneficial for stabilizing group energy, bringing a cooperative spirit and the willingness to work together for a common good. It promotes a positive outlook on life and demonstrates the connective structure of love among and between all that exists. [Melody En, 298][Simmons, 159][Ahsian, 160][Hall, 131][Gienger, 40]
Yttrium Fluorite, also Yttrofluorite, occurs in massive and granular form in a variety of colors with a significant amount of the rare earth element, Yttrium, taking the place of Calcium ions in the mineral structure. It lacks the perfect cleavage of other Fluorite varieties and does not emit the energies that correct disorganization; it does, however, possess all remaining qualities. It is known for attracting wealth and abundance, increasing mental acuity and empowering one to bring their thoughts and ideas into manifestation. It is an excellent stone for service-oriented activities, and is particularly useful in helping one remain silent when silence is best, and to be quite verbal when it would further one to do so. [www.mindat.org][Melody En, 299][Hall, 131]

[Melody En, 294][Hall, 129]
Blue John Fluorite Chakra Healing and Balancing Energy
Fluorite is balancing to the Third Eye Chakra and to mental energies in general. It is one of the most powerful of the New Age Stones, bringing onto the physical plane higher forms of truth and integrating those concepts into the mind, which in turn manifests on the material plane. [Simmons, 159][Raphaell, 106-107]
The Brow Chakra, also called the Third Eye, is the center of our perception and command. It directs our sight and everyday awareness of the world. Our consciousness is located here, and we relate to ourselves through this chakra. When the Brow Chakra is in balance our thoughts and internal communications within ourselves are healthy and vibrant. We are open to new ideas, dreams and visions, and can control the flow of energy within all the chakras. The dark blue/purple crystals of indigo are used to treat imbalances of the Brow Chakra. It is a quiet color, one of mystery and wisdom and judgment.
Blue John Fluorite also activates the Crown Chakra, located at the top of the head. It is our gateway to the expanded universe beyond our bodies and controls how we think, and how we respond to the world around us. It is the fountainhead of our beliefs and the source of our spirituality. When the Crown is in balance, our energies are in balance. We know our place in the universe and see things as they are. We are unruffled by setbacks, knowing they are an essential part of life. Imbalances of the Crown Chakra are treated with light violet crystals. Their violet rays have the universal life force of magic, dreams, inspiration, and destiny.
A simple Fluorite balancing can be accomplished by lying face up and holding a Fluorite octahedron in each hand, with one placed above each eyebrow. This will balance the hemispheres of the brain and clear the mind of unwanted mental debris. [Raphaell, 111] (For a comprehensive Fluorite Octahedron Layout designed to channel and ground cosmic energy into the creative centers of the body, see Crystal Enlightenment by Katrina Raphaell, pages 42-43.)
Blue John Fluorite Spiritual Energy
Fluorite is a multi-dimensional crystal manifesting the highest aspect of the mind: attunement to Spirit. It heightens intuitive powers, and awakens one to the purity and perfection of the universe and how each individual fits into that perfect plan. Within Fluorite’s essence, it is possible to develop an understanding of the non-physical realities of the fourth, fifth and sixth dimensions, and to explore the inner sanctums of the self, where all knowledge and wisdom is contained. Fluorite allows one to align with the source of our being and to stay consciously attuned to Divine Will while still functioning on the physical plane. It enables one to be at peace while still claiming one’s uniqueness and individual expression. [Raphaell, 106-107, 113][Hall, 129][Melody En, 295]
Blue John Fluorite Color Energy
Indigo is the dominant energy in Blue John Fluorite. It combines the intuition of the violet ray with the trust of the pure blue ray, bringing wisdom, truth, dignity and spiritual mastery. A stone of judgment and long life, it promotes introspection and can result in profound wisdom when used well. Dark indigo Blue John provides honesty and is especially good for religious and spiritual journeys, while light indigo crystals connect us to the natural world and improve our appreciation of others.
Blue John Fluorite may also be influenced by violet energy. It inspires awe, and invites a feeling of mystery and magic, nobility and luxury. It is one of the most powerful rays in nature, helping us interpret our dreams and inspiring us to great deeds and accomplishments. Dark violet crystals are dream talismans, providing insight and giving us a window to the soul beyond ordinary understanding. Lavender talismans, the lighter shade of violet, focuses on our feelings and understanding our hidden yearnings. They’re crystals of the free, unfettered intellect and heart.
Blue John Fluorite is interspersed with bands of yellow, which brings an energy of new interests and new relationships, helping us to see things in a different light. Light yellow crystals ensure that new relationships get off to a good start by aiding in the establishment of good communication. They help us focus on the needs of the person or group we are getting to know. Dark yellow crystals are an excellent aid when decisiveness, precision, or persuasiveness is needed.
Meditation with Blue John Fluorite
Fluorite is a powerful Wind element stone utilizing the power of thought, focus and concentration, making it ideal for meditation and achieving a “no mind” state of consciousness. It is capable of producing rich visions and insights, as well as strengthening one’s ability to receive and interpret psychic information. [Ahsian, 159-160][Lembo, 150] Blue John Fluorite, placed on the throat and brow, encourages clairaudience and clairvoyance. [Eason, 243]
Meditating with Fluorite clusters in the workplace or during a hectic day will initiate conscious mental clarity, helping one to grasp concepts and realities that might otherwise be inaccessible. These clusters are marvelous boosts for when the mind is tired, confused or imbalanced. Fluorite pyramids are special structures intended for meditation, and are there for those who are ready to move into the inner realms of being. When held to the light, many display inner sanctums resembling chambers that descend deep within and are excellent for drawing the mind to seek deeper within itself. The pyramid is symbolic of the ultimate balance each soul must achieve to complete its evolutionary process. [Raphaell, 109, 111] (For an excellent Fluorite Pyramid Meditation, see Crystal Enlightenment by Katrina Raphaell, pages 112-113.)

Blue John Fluorite in Ancient Lore and Legend
In the ancient world, many believed Fluorspar was crystallized light and could help man achieve enlightenment by bringing light into the brain. It was also deemed to be the “home of the rainbow” because of its many colors, which often grew intermingled or side by side. To the ancient Chinese, purple Fluorite offered protection from evil spirits, and its clusters were considered to be “dream makers.” The Romans believed drinking from a vessel made of Fluorite, like Amethyst, would prevent a person from becoming intoxicated. [www.controverscial.com][Eason, 210][lifestreasureskauai.com]
While some of Fluorite’s magical properties may have been overlooked or labeled in early texts as other stones, its value in many cultures of the world is evidenced by its use, dating back thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians used Fluorite for carving scarabs and statues of the gods, while green and other fluorites were carved into vessels by the Chinese and, at times, used as a substitute for Jade. The Romans, Celts, Britons, French, Germans, American Indians and others all prized the beauty of Fluorite, carving it into figurines, deity statues, art, totems, amulets and talismans, as well as decorative bowls, cups, dishes and vases. [101 Hall, 90][Eason, 293][lifestreasureskauai.com][www.controverscial.com]
Fluorspar vessels were highly prized by the Romans for their rarity, intricate banding, and for the special flavor given to the wine drank from them, a result of the resin used to help hold the crystals together during the shaping process. Pliny the Elder, Roman historian, naturalist and author of the first encyclopedia of stones and their powers, speaks of at least one Roman noble who enjoyed chewing the edge of his vessel. He also notes the Emperor Nero is reputed to have paid over a million sesterces for one Fluorspar cup ($240,000 today). [www.britishmuseum.org] Pliny considered Fluorite “a most precious substance,” and in referring to the delicacy of this stone, he wrote, “It came to be deemed the proof of wealth, the true glory of luxury, to possess something that might be destroyed in a moment.” [www.storenvy.com]
Roman sources also speak of an incident where Julius Caesar’s predecessor, “Pompey the Great,” took six Fluorite vases from Mithridates’ treasure and had them installed in the temple of Jupiter. There is also the mention of a valuable Fluorite vase taken by the Roman Emperor Augustus from the Pharaoh’s palace in Alexandria, Egypt. [www.lifestreasureskauai.com][www.controverscial.com]
Rare artifacts of Fluorite have also been unearthed in America, in cultivated fields and burial sites of the southern Illinois-western Kentucky Fluorspar region. These remarkable carvings date from the Mississippian Moundbuilders era, between 900 and 1650 A.D., and reflect the native peoples of the Mississippi Valley. A large number of colorful Fluorite beads, pendants and ear ornaments have been found, as well as four complete, or almost complete, Fluorite statues of figures in the seated position. They range in size from nine to twelve inches tall. The head of what would be a fifth statue was found in Tennessee, and the head and shoulders of a sixth statue from southern Illinois represent the total known Mississippian Fluorite statues. [lithiccastinglab.com][www.jtv.com] Illinois, whose state mineral is Fluorite, has a museum dedicated to Fluorspar that sits on the site of an actual mine last worked in 1954, and the Ben E. Clement Mineral Museum in Marion, Kentucky, houses the world’s largest Fluorite collection. [www.glimmerdream.com]
Hydrofluoric acid formed from Fluorite has been used for etching glass since 1670, and in the 1700’s was diluted with water to a near infinitesimal degree and used for matters of health. This mixture was reported to alleviate symptoms of kidney disease, shrink varicose veins to half their size, grow fresh hair on a bald head, and cure sores on the fingers or within the nostrils. [Fernie, 148][www.controverscial.com]
An early eighteenth-century experiment in Germany was conducted to demonstrate the effects precious stones and minerals had upon a sensitive person. The woman chosen for the experiment was Friederike Hauffe, known as the “Seeress of Provorst,” a woman believed to possess remarkable clairvoyant powers. She felt nothing when the first few stones were placed in her hand, but on coming into contact with Fluorspar she experienced deep muscle relaxation, and occasionally entered a “somnambulistic state” (as if in a trance or moving within a dream).
